What direction are we headed?

Is the trucking industry heading in the right direction? Is the country heading in the right direction? Those are some of the questions we’ve asked drivers for recent “Say What?” columns, including this issue. The answers are all over the board, depending on the individual driver’s particular viewpoint.

What we present in “Say What?” are snapshots, not scientific surveys. Catch someone on a good day, and the world looks great. Catch the same person on a bad day, and everything is going to heck in a handbasket. Having said that, it’s interesting to note a general dissatisfaction with the direction we’re headed, at least according to our small sample of drivers.

We’re not in the habit of delving into the political arena, but as we write these words on the eve of the 2006 midterm elections, it’s almost impossible to avoid the stuff. Fortunately, by the time you read this, the elections will be over, the attack ads will be off the air and we can all get back to the issues that really matter—our families, our jobs and our own happiness (in this crazy world, some might settle for sanity!).

Speaking of happiness, all of us at Over the Road and Pro Trucker wish you and your family a joyous holiday season and a prosperous New Year.
