Quick action aviods potential 'big mess'
Dear Murphy,
My husband and I were driving through Tennessee on I-40 just before entering North Carolina. My husband was driving, and as we approached a bridge, my husband noticed there was something in the middle of the road ahead. He stopped the truck, got on the CB and told the eastbound lane to “back it down, we have an accident in the middle of the road on the bridge.”
We got the eastbound lane stopped before anyone hit the car. There were five guys with the car, which had an Arizona plate. The five guys got the car off to the side of the road while my husband used a cell phone to call 911.
The Highway Patrol and County Sheriff came out and told my husband that if he hadn’t stopped in time, there would have been a big mess. We later found out that the five guys were illegal immigrants. Before the law arrived, four of them took drugs out of the trunk of the car and left the scene. What a morning!

Dear Cathy,
First of all, congratulations to your husband for his quick action that no doubt prevented a serious accident, and perhaps prevented possible injuries and even the loss of life. Over-the-road professionals routinely do these sort of heroic things every day, but no one knows how many accidents they prevented or lives they saved except for the potential victims and the law officers who arrive on the scene.
Your husband not only possibly saved fives lives, he risked his own in the process. Five illegal immigrants on the run with a trunk full of drugs are likely to do anything to get away. I’m glad to hear that no one was hurt in this potential “mess,” especially you and your husband.
You said four of the five took off with the drugs. I’m guessing the fifth guy left behind had a “Murphy Day” he won’t soon forget, and he wasn’t even driving a truck.
As we like to say in Murphy’s World, any “Murphy Moment” that you can drive away from with body and soul intact is a good “Murphy Moment.” We call that “experience.” They make great stories. Thanks for sharing yours.
Regards,
Murphy and Lucky Dog
