Million Milers at Dart Transit
In the past 20 years, Dart Transit Company has awarded more than 500 of its contractors with the National Safety Council’s One Million Mile Award, more than 90 contractors with the Two Million Mile Award, and 20 contractors with the Three Million Mile Award. Two Dart contractors have driven four million miles.
Although it is a simple concept, it is very difficult to achieve. “When you drive that many miles accident free, and qualify for an award, that denotes professionalism,” said Dart Safety Director Steve Kaufmann. “These contractors operate in all types of weather and traffic on the road. That requires great concentration and expertise.”
It generally takes contractors between 7 and 10 years to qualify for the award. “The National Safety Council’s awards are very prestigious, so we are incredibly proud of the awards we give out,” said Kaufmann. “Million-mile awards are a biography of a person’s driving life. When someone sees a plaque on a truck it says a lot about the person who received it.”
Because contractors have to request a million mile award in order to be recognized with Dart’s safety program, Kaufmann estimates that 4 to 5 times as many Dart contractors qualify than those that actually request the award. But whether they are awarded or not, the million milers’ safety records at Dart significantly contribute to the company’s record as one of America’s safest trucking companies.
Dart’s award winning professional driver development program includes a yearly driver improvement course, safety advisors, driver performance analysis, and professional recognition.
On August 6, Dart recognized the contractors who have million mile safe driving records at its Contractor Appreciation Days picnic. The contractors received buttons and pens that read, “Thanks a Million.”
Congratulations to all Dart contractors who have received the million mile awards. Dart thanks all of its contractors for operating safely.
