C.R. England Driver Trainers Find Teaching Rewarding
SALT LAKE CITY , UT ( October 18, 2005 ) – Wanted: Highly patient people, with positive attitude, ability to clearly communicate and confidently handle stress. No this isn’t a typical advertisement for a kindergarten teacher; it’s for driver trainers.
Successful driver trainers not only have strong social skills, but they are also skilled drivers and talented businessmen and women.
C.R. England, one of the oldest and largest family-owned trucking companies in the United States , has more than 530 driver trainers.
A driver is eligible to become a driver trainer for C.R. England as early as six months after becoming a company driver or with a minimum of one-year driving experience for another company and then 60 days driving for C.R. England. They must then pass a one-week training course, which isn’t a cakewalk.
“If money is your only motivation, you won’t be successful,” said C.R. England, Inc. Director Bud Pierce. “Patience, compassion and a vivid recollection of when you were a student driver will make you a successful trainer.”
While C.R. England’s driver trainers have the potential to earn $60,000 - $90,000 as company driver and $100,000 - $150,000 as an independent lease contractor, the rewards are often more than financial.
“You can’t put a monetary value on the pride a driver trainer feels in seeing one of their apprentices succeed,” said Pierce. “The comradery between trainers and apprentices is very rewarding and long lasting.”
Apprentices spend anywhere from four weeks to six months driving with their trainers. But the bond between teacher and student can last a lifetime and the learning never ends.
”I see my trainer, Gerta Spain , out on the road and she’s still a mentor to me,” said Marc Morgan, who has been an independent lease contractor for four years and trainer for nearly two. “It’s the same with my apprentices.”
Billy Moore, who has been driving for 16 years and trained more than 50 drivers, agrees that his role as driver trainer is never done. He gives apprentices his mobile phone number and encourages them to call if they have questions or problems, even after their official training is done. “I’m always teaching, and always learning,” he said.
But being a driver trainer isn’t for everyone, said Morgan, who calls Kansas City , MO home. “There’s a lot of pressure being a driver trainer,” he said. “It’s your responsibility to make sure your apprentices are safe and courteous.”
But the stress melts away as he talks with pride about his apprentices.
Utah-based C.R. England’s more than 4,350 courteous employees, drivers and owner-operators take pride in providing the highest quality service, safety and on-time delivery with more than 2,600 trucks and 4,100 trailers. O perating in the 48 contiguous states, Canada and Mexico , C.R. England has become an industry leader in providing temperature-controlled truckload, brokerage, intermodal and container service.
