Kohler Power Systems Enters Heavy-Duty Truck Market With New 5 Kilowatt Diesel APU Product
KOHLER, Wis. – July 2006 – Taking its 85-plus year history in the power generation market, Kohler Power Systems announced it will expand its generator product line to include an auxiliary power unit (APU) for the heavy-duty trucking industry.
The new KOHLER 5-kilowatt APU will be available later this year and will offer trucking fleets, OEMs and truck owner/operators the only air-cooled APU in the 5kW, side-rail mounted size. The air-cooled, self-contained engine means less intrusion into the truck’s critical systems. Understanding that compactness is crucial, Kohler designed its first APU product to be one of the smallest and lightest air-cooled generators on the market (27” W x 26” H x 23”D and weighing less than 350 pounds).
The KOHLER APU (120-volt AC and 50-Amp DC power) is also designed with a direct-drive alternator – a direct connection between the engine and alternator. By eliminating the alternator belts found on competitive models, Kohler is able to offer increased reliability and reduced maintenance issues. Additionally, the KOHLER APU has an oil service interval of 500 hours to reduce standard maintenance costs.

The KOHLER Advanced Digital Controller will come standard on the new APU product, which allows the driver to start and stop the generator, and adjust the heating and cooling from inside the cab. The digital controller also features an easy-to-read LED screen that displays up to 13 operational conditions.
Additional features of the new KOHLER APU include:
- A custom sound-attenuated enclosure for quiet operation
- A full in-cab climate control system providing both heating and cooling output with a remote digital gauge for in-cab monitoring and operation
